After a long stretch of hot and muggy summer days, the weather for the Drive, Chip and Putt Sub Regional at University Ridge this past Saturday was every golfer’s dream. Despite a cooler than usual temperature and humidity level—the competition heated up right from the get go. The top three qualifiers from Wisconsin’s six local sites held this past July advanced to University Ridge, the second stop, on the #Road2Augusta. This made for a total of 144 juniors contending for two spots in each age division, boys and girls, to move on to the Regional at Hazeltine National. The first tee time was 9am, and by 8:15am, dozens of junior hopefuls were scattered throughout the grounds at University Ridge, warming up their drivers, wedges, and putters.
The field included participants from all over the state including Rhinelander, Green Bay, Beloit, Milwaukee, and also a handful of Illinois residents. It’s safe to say that a steady practice regimen is on each golfer’s agenda for the summer. After all, those who advance out of the various Regional sites make it to the Drive, Chip and Putt Finals the Sunday before the Masters tournament at Augusta National on April 2nd of 2017.Golfers get points based on how accurate their three Drive, Chip and Putt attempts are according to the grids at each station. The Wisconsin PGA awards medals to the top three point earners in each skill and overall. The top two overall point winners in each of the eight divisions continue the #Road2Augusta.
After each participant in their age group finishes the competition, the Awards Ceremony takes place shortly thereafter. Players were reminded each qualifying stage gets more difficult, to celebrate the good and the bad shots, and improve upon these three fundamentals for better golf games. The last group wrapped up the day at around 3:15pm, and we are proud to announce the Qualifiers who are moving on to the Regional at Hazeltine National on Saturday, September 10th:
